A graduate of the Soviet Military Academy, he was a trusted operative in the Soviet intelligence service, and in 1955 was posted as the Assistant Military Attache at the Soviet Embassy in Ankara, Turkey, an extremely important position for an intelligence officer at the height of the Cold War. In 1961 he contacted the British intelligence service and offered his services as an agent in exchange for money. A deal was struck, and Penkovsky used his position to obtain and pass along valuable Soviet military and political documents and photographs--approximately 5,000 altogether--using a British businessman stationed in the Soviet Union as his go-between. From his time at school until the end of his career, Gazzaev played exclusively as a striker. To strengthen physical strength and develop individual skills, Gazzaev also participated in athletics, basketball and volleyball.
Gazzaev won his first serious victory together with the team: as part of the children's competition "Leather Ball", their team won the championship of the North Ossetian Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic, and Gazzaev became the top scorer of the tournament.
In 1970 he began playing for Spartak (Ordzhonikidze). In the spring of 1971, Gazzaev was going to leave big football after, as a player at the Youth Sports School, he did not get into the double team of the Ossetian Spartak. In 1977, after Lokomotiv's tour of Turkey, the Fenerbahçe club became seriously interested in Gazzaev and even sent a delegation to him, offering him a colossal sum in exchange for a move to the Turkish team, but Gazzaev refused their proposals.
Gazzaev played his debut game for the USSR national team on September 6, 1978 in Nikita Simonian's team against Iran in Tehran.
